Does anyone plan on modding their XR3, and if so what? All electric? All diesel? I would like to go all electric, but I think the products are not quite there yet.

The products for Electric are there, they are just too dang expensive still. I want to have a hybrid, but I plan on using it mostly for a daily commuter so I would probably be running it mostly just electric. The ICE option is also there for longer trips. I also want to mod my XR3 so it looks different. The look I want is not nearly as aerodynamic, but it would look cool, although the tapered rear might not work with this look. I posted pictures of the look I want in the XR3 group page. autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/xr3car/photos/browse/b902 Right now, it looks like it would be cheaper to build my version of the XR3 without the electric capabilities, then when I could afford to, add the electric motor/batteries/controller etc... I have not even ordered my XR3 plans yet though, not yet.

I remember seeing those photos. Maybe you could make a sketch of it with 3 wheels for some ideas. I'm not sure how easily the XR3 chassis would lend itself to a totally different body, but it does lend itself to some changes.
The XR3 design was setup, so you could use ICE first, then add electric later. It should fit the bill well for you. I just got the plans Monday, and ordered some steel yesterday. Tomorrow I hit the junkyard for the knuckles. ;D

I like the fact that the XR-3 can be modified to anyone's needs. Since I live in a tropical country and have to spend 3 hours (daily) into stop-and-go traffic I need A/C, a good radio/mp3/TV/DVD system and comfortable seats. And I'll need to replace the canopy for some door design that allows easy entry while keeping most of the rain outside.
All those options add weight, so I'm studying more powerful ICE options, and I'd like to have regenerative braking. Have someone found a regen braking system (or components) available for the garage builder?

An AC motor can be used for regen braking. Also an externally excited DC motor can too. I'm not sure how each system needs to be wired, but it's a starting point for research for you.
Feel free to start up a topic on it as you get more information on the subject.
