Cleaned-up the edging on the rear hole. Cut a small slit where the rear frame rail meets the rear bumper support, then tapped the frame rail edging a bit with the hammer. The frame rails were ever so slightly closer together at the very rear of the vehicle and only the lower part of the rail. Not anymore. Fabbed and welded the 2 lower sides to the rear battery box frame. Test fits great in car. I was able to go back out there and test fit the cells. They fit great! Can't wait to continue on it.

The 2 larger sides of the rear battery box have been fabbed and added to the battery box. I checked as best as I could to see if it will still fit in the car. Looks good so far. A suspension component will need to get removed for the battery box to get installed. This will come later. I test fit some cells in the battery box, and they still fit. A perfect fit, I might say too. (Things change up a little when welding.)
There are a couple more parts left for the rear battery box, but it isn't much. I'll also have to order some more metal too. (angle) I just wanted to run some angle all around the top of the battery box to really stiffen it up. It will also give me something firm to attach the top to, once installed.
Can't wait to complete these boxes!

Had some time today, so I was able to test-fit the rear battery box in place. A perfect fit! It has been installed with a couple temporary screws.
There's a teeny piece of structural steel that I want to trim, but that is about it.
I made a template for the 2 remaining side pieces, and will cut those out whenever another chance arises. I'll also have to remove the battery box to make a few holes in it. (will make welding easier when fabbing it into the car.)
Looking forward to more free time!

Got those 2 side pieces done and also another piece to close off the hole. There's only a little work (drilling/grinding) left before welding the box into the car. Since my welder doesn't reach the car, I'll be starting on the last 2 boxes next. They will be the same size and be build together.
Once completed, the car will get rolled to the garage for battery box installation/welding.
I just want to wire it up!

After some time off (to complete a home project), I got back to work... There will be 2 like this (5 cells), 2 with 3 cells, and 2 with 2 cells. These will be assembled into 2 packs of 10 cells each. These last packs will be odd shaped to accomodate the spacing. However, these will be the last battery packs! Attachments:

No posting does not necessarily mean no progress, but in this case it does. Been super busy with the baby. I MIGHT be able to weld another cell holder today. (MIGHT)

Scraped 2 hours of fab-time this weekend.
Completed another 5-cell holder, and a 3-cell holder. Also cleaned up the first 5-cell holder. All have been painted too.
Will need 1 more 3-cell holder, and (2) 2-cell holders.
Getting a wee closer.......

Haven't had enough time to get any metal work done. I'm lucky to get an hour on the weekends and that is usually not at one time.
Guess this will take a lot longer than I thought...

The last 3-cell holder was welded, ground, and painted yesterday!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
I have (2) 2-cell holders to make now (which I will try to assemble out of extruded metal rather than welding).
The next step will be to assemble a battery tray that will hold the cell holders, then attach that in the car.
...getting closer with this battery pack stuff.

The last cell-holders were completed this weekend. (2) 2-cell holders.
I was busy building a new storage place for the Opel lately. It is nearly done now. Much better than the old circus tent. The new building has a place for me to store and work on the XR3 as well!
Once the pavers are installed in the building, touch up work can commence on the rear battery tray.
I think the EV ball is rolling again.

Carl, I will be selling off my EV hobbies. The Opel GT is listed here; www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/showthread.php/1972-electric-opel-gt-sale-130514.htmlI think I will strip the EV stuff out of the Opel (unless it is sold soon), and maybe put them in my trike again. I will not build a body for the trike. Probably, get it as a fully driveable vehicle again, and have fun with it in the neighborhood. For the right price it will eventually get sold.

All of the EV stuff is out of the Opel. It has been washed and looks oh so pretty. A neighbor said he would buy it and stick some gas motor in it. It will probably go in a week or 2. (hopefully)
Trike work has begun...

The Opel is sold (gone).
The motor adapter plate, coupler, lightened flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch disk are for sale. All for $500.
