Starting work on a Father, Son, Friend and Friend project. Conner (15) will be the proud owner of this vehicle when finished. Support from Dad and Friend Chris are helpful and expected, support from Dad's friend Don is required as without his skills we are unqualified for this project. It is expected to be a great learning experience and we hope to be done by the end of next summer.

July 13, 2009 Met at Fat Daddy's with Don and discussed schedules to work, what we needed to get started, etc. We had read the manual just before this meeting to had an idea on what we needed to get started. Went shopping for metal later that day and purchased enough round and rect. tubbing to get started. Burgers were good

July 14, 2009 Went to Don's, cut some piping to length, and did some sanding on them. Worked on cutting the angle into fa-sm-4. Sanded 4, and began looking at holes in 1 and 3.

Finished sanding, and cut holes into fa-sm-1 and 3. First injury of project, Chris pokes Conner and then himself with a burning hot, freshly sanded nail (love the smell of burnt skin ). Cut arcs out of fa-sm-5 with cutting torch, and ground down. Tack welded fa-sm-1 to 4.

Welded fa-sm-2 to 3, and began fitting the end of the 5s to the 2 inch tubes. Lots of grinding and cutting involved to equalize the length and make the pipes fit. Ordered waterjet parts this week from Marzee-minus the honeycomb and battery box as we will be modifying it to accommodate for the [shadow=black,left,300]all electric design[/shadow]

July 28/30, 2009 Welded sub assembly frame together. fa-sm-5s needed more grinding, spent majority of time lining, squaring, and measuring. Then took it apart, sanded it and realigned. Conner welded some of frame, but not well. Will be re-welded later. Marzee shipped waterjet parts on Thursday. Friday Dad noticed that fa-sm-13 was not part of Marzee's original quote, so it did not get ordered. He sent note to ask about/order this part. Also, Dad is working real hard to catch up on the xr3 forum. He has been collecting the achieves since it started and was only 14 months behind. Now he is only 11 months behind Here are some pictures from the last week or two. And the Frame

vmrod, Thanks so much. You are actually my hero and have already provided great input for me in the yahoo group. I just got caught up with that group and will answer your question shortly. I don't think I am that far from you as I can hit Shreveport in 4 hours. I may need to plan a drive to see your vehicle. Thanks again.

I'm 3 hours or so from Shreveport. I don't mind if you wanna come check it out, but there is not much else to see besides the pictures. (I wish it were semi-drivable right now, but it's not.)
If you need any help, I can take more hi-res pics of whatever you want, or a short movie. ;D

Ok, we have been real busy this week, but not a lot of actual construction. We have received the water jet parts from Marzee. A little too much rust on these parts for my taste (thought they would come clean). We organized and labeled all these parts. We sanded/cleaned up the shock mount pieces and tried some bending. We were having a hard time with this, so we decided to punt and borrow the services of someone with a break. The only other metal work we did was to clean up some of the welds and added FA-SM-6 (supports) to the frame. A lot of time was spent getting organized. We ordered all the metal needed for the Front Assembly and the Tunnel Assembly. Expect that to be available on Monday. We are going to split our work at this point. On weekends, we will make/cut the small parts for the Front assembly and when working with Don, we will start assembling the tunnel and do the other welding work. WE ALSO GOT CAUGHT UP ON THE YAHOO GROUP. Finally we started to hone our own welding skills to a fine mess. But hey, we started practicing. We even have a video of bad welding img190.imageshack.us/img190/6463/video080609001.mp4

Howdy Mike and Conner! It's great to see your progress. I'll look forward to seeing the steps as you become master car builders. Warmly, Steve

Hey Guys, nice work so far. Did you order all of the waterjet parts at once and if you don't mind saying how much it cost? just looking to narrowing the prices down. I listed a post on the Yahoo group about the RA-TA holder if your interested.
